Note; Therion 5.4.4 has a bug that causes “extend ignore somestation” to break at the wrong station. This is fixed in builds after 14 November 2019. If you are relying on this functionality, you should use versions after this date.

Helping Therion to calculate cave lengths

When exporting a “cave-list”, Therion tries to identify entrances and surveys, and tries to work out which survey an entrance belongs to. It also tries to work out the lengths of the various caves in the survey. While it might be nice to assume that Therion can look through all of your survey data, find all the entrances, work out which bits of survey data are connected to which other bits without using any

Colouring elevations

With elevations and extended elevations, it is possible for passages to be stacked in front of each other (the same as they may appear below each other in a plan survey).

For plans, colouring is as simple as asking Therion to colour scraps by altitude (as long as you chose your scrap locations wisely). For elevations, there is no equivalent. Some may choose to leave elevation views uncoloured. Some may choose to use a single foreground colour for elevations:

Converting SVG cave maps to Therion th2 format (by Jürgen Bohnert)

Update (10. 06. 2012): Cookbook for [conversion of SVG files to th2 format with Inkscape]

Update: Check the Inkscape Export Plugin, it's an improved and simple to use version of the converter script.

Therion comes in very handy due to the fact that it produces dynamic maps and supports a bunch of 2D and 3D formats, especially GIS formats like ArcView. Also the generation of 3D maps from 2D maps is very striking. And it is Open…

If you are learning to draw you should first work through Therion for Cavers and Therion by Examples. The Therion Book that downloaded with your version of Therion is the definitive command reference.

If you already have the background knowledge, and just need a quick prompt to remember how to draw consistent maps, this page might be helpful. I flick to this page every time I start a drawing.

Therion's outputs are either biased towards presenting survey centerline information or biased towards presenting drawing information. See Outputs page for a summary of what you can get.

This is complicated by the ability to select for output survey centerline information and drawing information independently (and Therion’s various default selection behaviours) within the same th-config compiler file.

In the 1990s Martin Budaj and Stacho Mudrák did a lot of caving and cave surveying. Some computer programs existed which displayed survey shots and stations after loop closure and error elimination. These were a great help, especially for large and complicated cave systems. They used, as many use till now, the …

When passages overlap, you may want to be able to show an exploded plan; a plan where the layers are separated away from each other, displayed side by side, instead of overlapping. Whether you use an application like PocketTopo or SexyTopo to input your data, or whether you input the data manually, you may still end up wanting some kind of elevation from an angle that you were not originally able to draw sketches for. Most of these applications produce plan and extended elevations, and most manual surveys will do something similar.

This article is based on the traditional rigging topo approaches and styles used in the UK. However, it is likely be to very similar to approaches used elsewhere, and the approaches can be adapted. The symbols used here were almost entirely made especially for the purpose of making rigging topos. The sample rendering shows a series of both explicit naturals (stalagmites, colums, flakes, boulders, trees, stakes, bars) and symbolic naturals (circle), explicit P-hangers and implicit …

Therion is intended for drawing caves, not surface maps. In general, it relies on the surface image and topographical data for showing the surface. However, you may wish to include surface features, such as dolines, buildings, trees, roads, paths, etc. on your survey, without having to add the noise of a satellite image.

Note

Bruce Mutton wrote extensive information on this topic in Bruce's Data Structure. But there are a few details, I think, that should be noted.

Scraps and maps in Therion

The standard convention when drawing a map is to mimic (or follow) the surveys and related sketches. ie the file(s) containing the scrap drawings correspond more or less with the files containing the survey data. However in Therion you are absolutely free:

This is my attempt at a means of making Therion work well with Windows. It has worked for me since early 2008 on various versions of Windows XP. I have had problems running Loch with Vista and am not sure why, but don't think it's related to the topic discussed herein. Win7 and Win8 work (after some effort and fiddling often-times), but the functionality I describe below does not always work out.
